My mother in law has an old thomson freeview box. Recently it has been losing channels on a regular (almost daily) basis. If we re download the missing channels they reappear, but disappear again very quickly. Is there anything she can do about this.

Sounds like the signal has degraded.
Check all your aerial connection.
If you still have analogue check out analogue teletext; it's quite a good rough check of signal quality.

Could this be part of the problem.

If its old perhaps a new one would be the best bet. There are plenty of basic boxes available for under £20.

A similar query here- Aerial problems are common
External ones can become knocked 'offtune' in the wind or as in my case a loft one had simply 'drooped' on its mount - a shove up ans twist aligned it- and I had all 106 channels back that had been slowly getting less and less.
