I have similar cables connecting my Canon compact Isus camera and my Nokia Express phone to the PC but one has a ferrite choke inline and the other does not.
What does this choke do?
Additionally, when downloading photos from camera or phone which gives better quality, connection by cable or by using the memory card in a reader?

Dowmnloading photo's
Both options are Ok, I suggest you try both and see what (if any) difference you can see.

There should be absolutely no difference when downloading directly by USB or by putting the Card in a reader.
You are merely transferring data nothing else.
