Connecting a Computer to a TV

Can you connect a PC/Laptop with an AVI output socket to a TV which has the red yellow white RCA input sockets to watch video.
I have been looking at some AVI leads on the internet and some people have reported they do not work.

AVI is a file format not output standard.

Your computer may vga or DVI output for which you can get an adapter
