AVI - DIVX

I have some home movies and it looks as they are AVI,They will not play on my samsung dvd player once i have burnt them to a dvd.
They play okay with WMP.I'm using windows xp pro.
Now the samsung will play DIVX can i convert AVI to DIVX then burn the DIVX files to a dvd disc?.
Any thoughts please.
