Alpha Numeric photo numbers.

When I download my pictures, I'm given a series of running numbers that I want to change. In effect I have to do this one by one but it takes a mountain of time. I go out and take 100-200 at a time !

A long time ago I used to have some software whereby I could select a clump of pics and re-number.

Does anyone have any information to assist me.
