Recorded TV to iPod?

Bit of a long shot BUT if I record digital TV onto a DVD on my Sony RDR HXD-870 is there any (legal/easy) way of transferring it to my iPod nano 3rd generation?
I am computer savvy and have iTunes on my PC if it helps and I am running Windows 7.

First of all, and most important, the DVD has to be finalised.
Next download a free program called 'handbrake', which converts the DVD to MP4. It takes about 30 minutes to carry out the conversion on a 30 minute program.
iTunes a recognised the file but wouldn't load it onto my iPod until it had carried out it's own conversion, which took about 90 minutes and it worked a treat.

Glad the freebie worked. I use a paid for programme : CuCusoft DVD to iPod converter, that shrinks a typical DVD film from 4 Gig to under 1 gig in iPod format. Also I find that for films I prefer to let the iPod synch from a seperate folder on the PC rather than letting it auto import into the iTunes folder.
