I am not sure whether a 22' or a 24' monitor best fit the 1920x1080 resolution.

See:

Most modern LCD monitors are able to correctly configure the native resolution.
I doubt if you will notice any difference between a 22in and 24in monitor using the same resolution setting.

I'm using an Acer 21.5" monitor for 1920*1080 and that's fine.

By default the characters are small so I've changed them to a larger size in some programs (I use Opera and have set it to 110% zoom for normal viewing). You can also set the default Windows setting to larger or smaller font size. It depends upon what you want!
