deleting old backups to clear hard disc space

I've run out of space on one of my hard discs, and I seem to remember from the last time this happened that I need to delete some old backups that I don't need any more. BUT - I cannot recall how to do this. Where are the old backups listed? I'm running Windows 7 on a four year old Acer machine if that helps. Any advice gratefully received,
Jonny

Just a thought:
Are you backing up onto the same Hard Disk that you are seeking to protect?
