Connecting 3g from phone to tablet

Another question regarding Microsoft Surface. One individual review states that there was no need for 3g connection as he connected via his phone. Could you do this with an Android phone or would it have to be a windows based one, i.e. Nokia? And how do you go about it? I ask because my phone contract will finish in May so I want to get a suitable phone for hosting a Surface.

Most modern smartphone software allows the phone to be used as a Personal wifi Hotspot.

Andriod 2.2 and later and iOS 4.3 and later certainly do.

As already advised, most smartphones these days can be used as a Mobile WiFi Hotspot.

This is known as "tethering" which (a) some networks or phone packages may not allow and (b) the data allowance can, in some cases be very small, as little as 100MB per month.

An alternative is a mobile MiFi device. This is a dedicated wireless router that runs on the 3G/HSDPA network. I use one of these on pay-as-you-go with my WiFi only iPad and it works well.
