How do I know if monitor needs replacing?

I have an old Acer monitor. Started comp. and screen came up with ACER name as usual. Then blank screen. Checking wires now. How long do monitor last?

Never mind...hubby fixed it HIS way. Cut off power and then plugged in and F8 but didn't go to safe mode. No wonder we have trouble with this computer!

That took all of 3 minutes to discover it wasent plugged in

If Monitor shows Message, its not a monitor problem. normally its not getting a signal from PC
