Laptop shutdown question

I just bought a new laptop and am wondering if I should unplug it when I shut it down each night. I have always had a desktop and am not sure. My husband says to leave it plugged in all the time and my boss unplugs his every day when we shut it down. Which is best for the laptop?

I always leave mine plugged in, but shut-down at night.
