Problem with sound

Ive got a problem with my sound.
I did have a sound card built into my motherboard, but for some time the sound had been breaking up and becoming distorted, not all the time, but frequently.
I bought a new PCI sound card and fitted it last week and everything was fine for a time, but in the last week it has slowly reverted to breaking up and becoming distorted.
I put my PC output through an external amplifier and speakers.
I am running win xp.
Thank you
Richard

The fault could be with the cable or external amplifier and not the PC.
As its an intermittent fault the only solution would be to remove amplifier, connect some speakers to your PC and leave it for a while. If the fault has gone it would indicate a fault with the external amplifier or cable.
