Paying back video files on my TV via ext hard drive

Hi, I've recorded a number of DVD's onto an external hard drive. The problem I have is that if the DVD's are 4:3, they can be adjusted to 16:9 when viewed through a Blue ray player on my TV. However, if I record the DVD's as music files onto an external hardrive or memory stick, when played back they and are in 4:3 they cannot be adjusted to 16:9. Is there any way the files can be changed to 16:9 before they are transfered to the external drive etc.
