First Time Build Help - I Want To Learn

Hi folks, I am wanting to go from the switch of Xbox to some serious gaming. I am looking to play the likes of Battlefield, this new Zday game and other FPS types at the minute but want to also think of future gaming ventures that I might get into. I am preferably wanting to go through overclockers.co.uk or scan.co.uk as they offer credit over a fixed term which means I can keep my savings. I started of by wanting to just buy a tower system like Alienware and get going but the more that I look, the more I want to understand the computer that i will be using. I am a 34 year old mechanic and a great believer in trying new things so this is where I am. I have watched a few videos from Newegg and still dont fully understand what parts would be best for this type of system.

This is what I have thought so far,

I was thinking of the i5 as from what i understand, the i7 is not going to benefit me much with gaming and is a bit of money extra ? I have a hard version of Windows 7 professional already and have contacted microsoft who say that it is fine for me to install it on my new system. I was thinking of a budget of around £1000 all in including a good monitor but i will stretch another bit of money if it is going to GREATLY benefit me. ANY help with this would be greatly greatly greatly greatly appreciated.

I have tidied up your links and added some comments.

Case. Not my choice of case but it will be fine.

CPU.For price difference the 2500K is what I would go for and it has more over-clocking potential as well which could eliminate the small performance advantage that the Ivy has.

Cooler. That is not a particular good cooler I would go for something like This.

RAM. You cannot really pick your RAM until you have sorted you motherboard out, so I'll come back to it later.

GPU. This is better and for not much more.

PSU. This is better.

As for hard-drives I would get myself a 128GB SSD, something like This for your operating system and programs and have a 1TB drive for your games ,films, music etc.

As for a monitor go for something like this Dell Ultrasharp. I had this and have now got the 27" version and they make most other monitors look naff. I also have an Acer 24"(not your choice) and there is no comparison between the two. The Dell is stunning.

Stand alone sound cards are not really necessary these days as on board is pretty decent these days. Much better to have a decent set of speakers.

Motherboard, may I suggest going the Z68 Sandy Bridge route rather than Ivy Bridge as the latter really does not offer much in the way of improvements.

We have yet to decide on RAM as a motherboard will need to be picked first.

I can help you price up a spec if you would like from Scan, this supplier would be better than Overclockers as they have quite a poor customer service record. I mainly use Scan for my builds and as yet cannot fault them.

Chronus.... Thank you soo much for this advice, I have to say that it would be fantastic if you could help me out with a list from Scan as that is who I want to use. This is my new revised list after speaking to a friend about the subject. What do you think ? Revised list

I never get the emails as I prefer to check back.

Anyway I have tweaked your build a little. Scan. Better graphics card, changed case and SSD and PSU.I also added thermal paste. I do not usually bother with Scansure so I would deduct the £33 but you will need to add £15 delivery.

Let me know what you think?
