automatic windows update

hi im looking for help when i start up my computer it comes up as windows update is switched off but when i try to switch it on it says it cannot do this and tells me to go into my computer and change it on manualy but when i try that it says it is already on for automatic updates but when i switch the computer on again the message still appears saying its not on i think my computer might be infected can anyone help me check if it is infected thanks donny
