3G connectivity on tablet PCs

Hi,

I've been looking attablet computers but I am a bit confused and I wonder if someone can answer a simple question for me: for a tablet PC with 3G connectivity is it necessary to have a mobile phone or another sort of contract to be able to use the 3G facility? I thought 3G was a mobile phone system so I don't understand how the tablet connects in order to use the internet. WiFi I understand but I am more interested in the 3G side of things.

thanks for you help,

Mike

I use a usb modem broadband dongle, connected via a miniUSB adapter to my Versus 7 Tablet, to get online.
