It seems like only the head of my last post was published. The scanner is Epson Stylus SX200. The preview appears sharper on the screen than the actual scanned jpg-picture if I place them side by side in the same size. it makes no difference which resolution I choose in the interval 150 - 1200 dpi.

I should add the program is Epson Scan, which is the standard program provided with the scanner

What format are you saving the scan in? If jpeg have you checked the quality settings?
Is it a photo or document that you are scanning?

Sorry for late reply due to Christmas vacation.
I scan in jpeg and the only quality setting I find is "level of compression", where I have chosen 8 on the scale 1-100.
The issue is related to scanning photos
