I have W7 and wonder if it is now OK to update to !E9? I had heard earlier that it was best to stay with IE8 but as time has gone on maybe IE9 has stabalised?

Have just read the Microsoft are going to "silently" update all IE in the New Year. So might as well do it now!

Nope leave it on IE8 if you are happy with it.
Microsoft only updating users that use I/E6 as they are going to remove it in 2012.
So I/E8 should be Ok.

I had no problems updating to I/E9 either I just don't like it.
I only updated to try and get SP1 installed but it did not help.
They should put the address bar back where it belongs.

Personally I think IE9 is Microsoft's best browser to date.

According to this IE/9 lags behind I/E8 and others.

butemanThe artice states that IE8 use is greater than IE9, but does not comment on quality - a bit like saying that XP outranks W7. I have found it quite ok to go along with updates like IE9, but I do not rush into beta releases like W8. I still do not know what is "wrong" with IE9, and why some prefer IE8.

I suppose because most users use Google Chrome because it is popular most users use IE/8 because it is popular as well.
If I/E9 was popular it would not be trailing I/E8.
You may think it is popular but I am afraid the majority of user still prefer I/E8.
Anyhow not sure why I should be caught up in this discussion as I now use Firefox which I think is better than any of the I/E browsers.

buteman - XP users have to remain with IE8 and has nothing to do with preference. IE9 had issues with some sites when it was first introduced including the ability to download statements from some banks, etc. I haven't checked recently to see if that snag remains.

Thanks all for your comments. I have gone for IE9 and am still getting used to the new layout. Will see how things go.
