This discovery at the University of Leeds could revolutionise the way batteries are made and lead to much safer, lighter and hopefully cheaper power sources in countless components from laptop computers to the batteries in electric cars. When I saw this news story I wondered if this would be the major breakthrough, on a par with transistors, which would get rid of the bottleneck in portable appliance design which is caused by large, heavy inefficient batteries.

If applied to electric cars - the quick charging up period of 90 minutes as against 9hours, for conventional batteries, would make petrolheads like Jeremy Clarkson a fan.
