Trying to accelerate network speed

According to the article I read, network acceleration is a hot project in IT field now. Due to more and more portable devices such as smartbooks, netbooks and other internet devices are increasingly web?centric, demanding continuous connectivity and downloading additional image data to fill people's larger screens.
"WAN acceleration can drastically improve the speed of file transfers and the performance of many applications for your branch offices and remote workers. And since at least half, and by some estimates up to two-thirds, of all workers are located OUTSIDE the company's central office, this can be a big win."
It also mentions about how WAN acceleration works and what the catch is?
Moreover, if now my company plan to accelerate our network, what should we do? Is a single application enough to solve the probable lack of wireless network capacity to address the rising demand?
