XP PC cannot connect to the internet even though the connection show as "connected/very good" PC losses the connection when watching films or playing games In the task bar there were connection 2,5,7 showing and all were showing as "connected" (but no internet) we disabled all but connection 7 (that is his D-Link router) and at the moment it seems to be going OK, however he has not tried any film or games hes afraid it crashes again. Can anyone offer any advice on this have we done right by disabling the connections 2 and 5?

Updtate

I thought it was too good to be true.........

PC is losing the internet connection regularly 7 or more times yesterday, still shows as "connected and very good connection" I rebooted the PC (sometimes for up to an hour before I could get online again, but PC only staying connected for a short while), could this be a problem with the Router itself (just surmising not techie) such a shame if we cant sort it as the PC itself is a nice fast PC.

Thanks hope someone can advise

Don't know if I should have started a new post but as it relates to this one here goes.

I thought about trying a wireless dongle (adapter)and I have a spare one issued to me from Virgin media it is Netgear wireless N Dual band USB adapter, the router in question is a D-link -G 122 H/ver it already has an adapter stood next to it, as the router is downstairs and PC is up stairs.

My Question is is it even worth trying this?, I'm not very techie and this might be a stupid question but thought Id ask anyway.

Further info Looks like this post is dead in the water:>( however just to add I tried a different PC and the problem was exactly the same as above, I thought this pointed to the equipment Router/modem does anyone want to confirm or dismiss my thoughts please?.

Why not connect using a ethernet cable and see what happens. If it is OK then the problem is with the wireless in your computer( unlikely as it happens on two machines) or the wireless in you router is intermittent.

Which connection is it that keeps dropping?

PC to router or is it the Router to Internet?

Have you checked the homepage of the router to check if it has been constantly connected to internet or if it has been dropping?

As far as I can make out the 2.5.7 seems to be 'Alt+Connect' program that manages Dial-Up modem connections to different ISP's. Is it a program left over from when you had dial up?

Thanks for all attempts to help with this problem. I'm late getting back here as I have been trying to get this internet connection set up via the phone, with the help of Talk Talk technician and brand new router from Talk Talk.He said the problem is between the router to the PC, as phone line and router are OK.

When I look in Lan or high speed internet, there are three items listed (is this right?) they are as follows

1.... 1394 connection disabled, firewalled.1394 net adapter.

2.... Wireless network connection 5 disabled firewalled, RT2550 USB wireless lan card.

3....Wireless connection 2 connected firewalled, 802.11g pci wireless network.

As you can see the connections were called 2,5,7 now they are 2.5 7 has disappeared.

There is also a listing under Personal area network it is as follows,

Bluetooth network connection, disabled firewalled.

The problem still exists PC can run for a few hours then lose the connection, then it can take a couple of hours to get it to connect to internet again.

I don't know if this is of any significance but the problem first started on Facebook on the chat, A message appeared saying "Chat has disconnected", then today my brother (it is his PC) disabled chat on Facebook to see if it would help, he continued on Facebook then decided to enable chat again the PC immediately lost the internet connection. Took 2 hours to get it back online. This is so frustrating as neither of us are computer techies but I know I little more than him and I want to try to help him.

Hi All

This is a never ending saga,

Just got a ethernet cable, thought it was just a case of turning PC off connecting ethernet cable, but the PC still uses the wireless connection so PC is still losing connection. Can anyone advise me as to what I need to change to force PC to use "wired"connection? Thanks again

BTW see my thread on my somewhat similar problem. As my old and new routers were not supplied by Talk Talk, they could only test the line as they did with you. However if they have supplied the router I think it worth them talking it through with you on the phone - I found them quite helpful; they even phoned back on a mobile. Their tech help no is 08700878777
