Try turning off the wireless adapter first then connect via ethernet cable from the router's port to the ethernet port on your laptop.

There is normally no need to 'turn on a LAN'. If a cable is plugged in, it will work. The only time it won't is if the OS has been reinstalled and the LAN driver is missing.
