cat 5 or cat 6 cables?

Hi,

Windows 7 Home Premium. Modem router with gigabit port, 500Mbs home plugs, 10/100/1000 ethernet port on desktop pc.

I have been using the, I guess cheap, cat 5 cables that came with the home plugs. For home use will cat 6 cables make any difference? I have read that only cat 6 support gigabit data transmission? I know that I have 500Mbs home plugs but it says they are capable of gigabit data transmission.

Cat5e rather than Cat5 will be enough ( 5e 10/100/1000 , 5 10/100 ) also Cat5e is backward compatible so it will work with older non gigabit kit as well .

Cat 5e will indeed be sufficient, but I was using cat 6 in excess of 5 years ago. Why? Because it future proofs me into the next level and I didn't want to have to do it all again.

When I did it, there was quite a difference in cable pricing. Not so much so now, so think about your options carefully.
