Do I Need a Ethernet Switch?

I have a SKYhd box connected to my router via a ethernet cable. I now have a Sony netbox which I would also like to connect to the internet via a cable. Rather than have two cables running through the living room to the router I would like to share the existing cable (hope this makes sense).
Looking on the net it would appear I need a ethernet switch with a couple of short patch cables. Is this the setup I need?

Yes, that's exactly what you need. It's normally described as a "Network Switch" to which you connect your existing ethernet cable and it will provide additional RJ45 ethernet ports. It will also need to use its own power supply.
