Do multiple antennae improve signal on a wireless network card?

I have tried using Google and Yahoo! Answers to get an answer without much luck.
But basically, what is the advantage (if any) of having 2 or 3 antennae on a PC wireless network card instead of just 1? If there isn't any, why are they sold?

Not everyone is going to be reading forums between a Saturday evening and 6am on Sunday morning!
Have a look at this article about MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology. To benefit from it, both router and network adapter would need to support MIMO.
