I understand that an adapter can be bought for about £40 but new printers cost little more. Is there a cheaper way of converting the printer so that I can print wirelessly? Thanks.

It's a bizarre situation isn't it that you can buy a new printer for as much as replacing ink cartridges in some cases.
If you have a router you could consider installing the printer directly onto that via an ethernet cable. You will need to assign the IP address of the router (usually starts with 192.168.) to the printer and it would be available to all PC's on the home network if you have one set up.
