Wireless Extension Help

I have Sky broadband and use their Sagem router. However I cant receive the wireless throughout all of the house. The router is positioned in the living room and I mainly use the internet in the loft. I either have a low connection or don't pick it up at all. I know that you can buy wireless range extenders such as http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-Universal-WiFi-Range-Extender/dp/B003LAD8BY/ref=sr15?ie=UTF8&qid=1315743155&sr=8-5
As far as I know you have to connect them to the router via ethernet and change some settings. What I want is something like an access point that I can have in loft whilst the router still remains downstairs. The reason for this is I want to connect things in the loft to the access point with ethernet cables.
I hope I made myself clear... Can you please tell me if there is anyway I can do this sort of thing.. if so how..
Thanks in advance to those that reply

Your best option may be Homeplugs. These plug into the mains and the router at one end, and can either be ethernet cable connected at the far end, or wireless. I've used them very successfuly in a number of different situations from Amazon here
