connecting laptop in free wifi cafe

Hello
I am hoping someone can assist with my connecting problem. Recently returned from a holiday where thee were various free wifi hotspots. Some needed a password which the cafe just gave you if you asked, others were open. My laptop connected without any problems at all these places except one. Other people at the same cafe did not have any problems but mine would not connect - kept receiving messages about certificates. The cafe owner even tried and could not connect to my laptop. My laptop found the signal okay.
Any ideas at all please. Thanks.
