How would you spend £100,000?

No doubt very easily.

But not on yourself, on your local high street to smarten it up and stop the decline.

Admittedly the money won't go far, yet what money there is seems to be going begging with few proposals on how to spend it.

Perhaps the High Street is a lost cause and there is no point in standing in the way of progress.

I've not read any magic solutions.

Perhaps giving a £20,000 subsidy to encourage five start up shops would be better than doing nothing. Of course existing retailers may complain that this is an unfair advantage if there is any overlap of trade.

The new retailers would have to produce a viable business plan in order to get the grant which in the light of experience will be no easy task. The move away from small physical shops seems unstoppable.

My local High Street (in Crawley, Sussex) and, indeed, the rest of the shopping areas don't need smartening up and all shops are open, trading and doing excellent business.

Thus, in this case, the question is irrelevant.

Can you expand on the reasons why Crawley is bucking the trend?

Is there little competition from out of town retail parks or large supermarkets for example?
