I am flummoxed as to how to paint the wall adjacent to the stair case. How do I reach the top bits without risk of killing myself. ie there is no way I can place the ladder on the stairs steps securely.

My wife and I had been married just 3 years and moved to a house when we tried your trick with the ladder and plank to the steps. However we were not painting but wallpapering, something that we had been quite happy to do together in an earlier one bed roomed flat. With a complete roll (33 feet - 11 yards) of pasted wallpaper dangling from my fingertips I sidled along the plank to the highest point of the wall while my young wife stood under the ladder. The inevitable happened and either the pasted wallpaper slipped out of my hands or it ripped with the result that I now had a partner, covered in paste and wrapped head to toe in wallpaper, directly under my feet.

We have never wallpapered together since that day (some 46 years ago).

chub_tor. That's a brilliant story which you have no doubt told your grand-children a few times and laughed about it. I can just see it now, a sort of Laurel and Hardy scene.

My wife and I had a few little skirmishes when decorating together. But between us we always made a damn good job of it. We once got a professional decorator in as we were short of time, to do our living room in the house I am in now. After a few weeks of living with the result we peeled it all off and did it ourselves. (One time I wished I hadn't got a "proper man" in). That was about fifteen years ago and our decorating has stood the test of time and it is still as it was then. It will be a long time before it need re doing.

Bing.alau Yes that story has been dusted down a few times and has passed into family lore along with a few others such as overtaking my father-in-law who was towing me downhill and me waving to him as I passed!
