Deleting adverts from browser and websites.

I have Windows 7 32 bit, and use Mozilla Firefox, with AVG for security. Adverts have now started appearing, some as small square boxes on the right hand side of the screen, others just along the top and some down both sides of the screen, including PC Advisor. Is there any way of removing these permanently? Any help much appreciated.
