Because of the damage done during the war it was probably quicker and cheaper doing it that way.

If I remember right after the D Day landings had been secured and the troops were moving inland the Yanks had to turn right and head for Cherbourg and remove any Germans still there as they needed the port to bring in more supplies and troops.

All the cranes on the dock were blown up and dumped into the water as the Germans fled.

Makes you wonder how they managed to get the Ships unloaded without them.

You can see I spend a lot of time watching all our yesterdays.I believe it was only last week that I was watching them take Cherbourg back from the Germans.
