Dunoon (Argyll & Bute) 'Fort (on) the river'.

Dun (Scottish Gaelic) 'fort';

obhainn (Scottish Gaelic adjectival variant of abh) 'river'.

Recorded as Dunhoven in 1270 and Dunnovane in 1476. Traces of a 12th-century castle, and possibly an even earlier fort, can be found on a rock above the pier of this resort on the Clyde.
