Central heating pump scaled on outside

British gas engineer due to call for noisy CH problem.

Is it usual for CH pump to be badly encrusted with limescale on the EXTERIOR?

It's leaking - a seal has disintegrated and the "Scale", as you put it, is the water's dissolved impurities left behind as it evaporates.

The scale should come off fairly easily, but replacing the seal is another matter. However it should not be out-with the skills of an averagely competent engineer!

As above the Pump is of a mixed alloy, so if it leaks as above it corrodes just like rust on steel

[On the exterior].Is it coming from the Large air screw on the middle of it or leaking from the copper pipes on to it.

If the big screw in the middle maybe it just needs tightening a bit.

Or maybe a new washer on the screw.

If you don't know what you are doing leave it to the engineer.

If British gas like you say they will probably try and sell you a new central heating system rather than replace the washer.

Noisy central heating system could it just be a bit of scale inside of the pump which sticks on it that makes the racket.

If it is your pump that is noisy that is probably what is causing the problem.

A few taps on the pump with a plastic or rubber hammer may move the obstruction that is causing the noise.

A new pump would probably cost £50 upwards then off course the cost of fitting it.

If fitting the same make and size of pump some plumbers only change the front of the pump and leave the back intact.Saves a bit of time I suppose.
