If you did quite a fair bit of regular frying, say chips. how do you normally dispose of your old stale oil? I am loathed to just chuck it down the drain for obvious reasons.

Doesn't your local council have a policy/facility?

It is quite legal to use it as fuel for diesel engines,as long as you've paid the duty on it for this purpose.Quite how the government discover you've paid the duty on 5 gallons, but have actually been using many gallons more escapes me.The fines for using illegal fuel are astronomical I believe.

I filter our old cooking oil and put it into our heating boiler fuel tank. I usually wait until the tank over half full and give it a mix with the dip stick through the inspection opening.

I take it to my local household waste centre. It gets turned into green electricity, much more environmentally friendly than tipping it down the drain.
