How to read Haynes manuals

I've got a collection of them,as every time I changed model of car I bought another.I bought one for my Ford Transit Minibus as it developed a fault in the braking system(highly dangerous fault,they simply ceased functioning)and on referring to the relevant section in the manual,the various components of the braking system were totally different.I gave up & took it to a local garage & it took the garage three full days to rectify the problem.I knew the mechanic from school & had a chat with him,apparently there are twenty different front brake calipers possibly fitted to Transits which was why it took three full days as the Parts Centre kept supplying the wrong calipers.

There is the other instruction in the Haynes Manuel I like.

Remove nut located just behind xyz = if you do manage to get it out you will never be able to replace it.

I have found them useful in obtaining information but I think it helps to have more that a basic knowledge of mechanics before you start. For instance replacing a light bulb can be a 5 minute operation when you know where to find the retainers.

Over the years I have purchased many Haynes books, and all have served their purpose well.

The last one that was purchased for a 'modern' car, left me rather confused as to the electrics on that vehicle. Best left alone to someone in the know was the motto!.

I recall many years ago, when I wanted to change the bushes in the back-end of an Allegro. Haynes was suggesting all sorts of things, including 're-gassing' of the suspension. The whole exercise would have taken more than half a day, plus specialist 're-gassing' if the instructions were followed. Quick look, a chat with the local main dealer mechanic, and two hours, a couple of jacks, a plank of wood, a pair of car ramps and the job was done. Apparently the dealers charged about 6+ hours for the job with extra fees attached?.
