"Excuse my attempt at what was voted the greatest guitar riff of all time."

It was an extremely good attempt. I think most people would get it almost immediately. It is often said that in music the simple things are the best, and - a few exceptions aside - I agree. It is an iconic riff, and one of the great things about it is that it's so easy to play - most budding guitarists pick it up very quickly. It resounds from a million bedrooms every day.

I used to love the feature that Danny Baker ran on his Radio 5 show many years ago where people would send in recordings of machinery playing this riff.

Here's a video of some floppy drives - bet you can't listen to more than 30 seconds.

Many people don't realise that Smoke on the Water was written about a Frank Zappa concert at Montreux Casino that ended in the destruction of the venue after an idiot in the audience decided to fire a flare which set the stage curtains on fire. For my money Frank Zappa was the greatest rock band leader ever, not only was he a fine composer and guitarist, but he ensured he always had the best musicians in his band, musicians who were allowed to flourish and express themselves. Sadly missed.

Sorry for the digression - RIP Jon
