Another Chief Exec Who Doesn't Know What's Happening

G4S boss Nick Buckles only realised a few days ago that a £280 million contact to supply security services for the Olympics was going belly up.

Understandable I suppose. He must be dealing with contracts of this size everyday of the week and the odd one or two are bound to slip through the net.

Yes, he expects to lose £50m on the contract, in part by paying for an extra 3500 troops. I still bet he does not get fired.

I really miss those 'back to the floor' type tv shows where the top boss goes undercover in his own organisation.

Is this another example of the private sector being so wonderful when compared to the public sector? This company was supposed to be the best in their field and are in line to take over many duties of the West Midlands Police. God help us all.

A quote from Chanel 4 News : "Mr Buckles, who told Channel 4 News he earns £1.2m a year, said he deserved his salary but it was unlikely that he will collect a bonus following the fiasco."

How cruel, to go without the bonus, how will he manage?

Vilify G4S as much as you like. They have had to follow government rules on recruitment. Which only allows them to employ certain people. People that can pass the strict screening procedure. About 20% of applicants failed at the first hurdle!

All they needed was a checkable work record!

Then they needed an SIA Licence. Have a guess who issues them? The Government. And they aint free. It takes an age to get an SIA Licence. You have to provide more information to SIA than the bloody Passport people.

I wonder if he asked the people who have to do the job of recruitment and training in his organisation if they could cope - not the management - the workers?

There's no shortage of companies offering SIA training for £99 on a quick Google search, and I would think that the vast majority of personnel required would be at the lower end of the training level for what is basically a temp job.

Is it not possible to easily take on existing security staff working doors etc from around the country that are already security cleared and trained to at least at a basic level?
