the police may extract all your data from your mobile phone and hold onto it even if you are found not guilty.

They keep telling us their budgets are being cut too much so why the need to spend lots of money needlessly keeping all this info.

So that we civilians think our Police are doing a wonderful job and are always busy,even if this work is needlessly securing such as mobile phone data?

In my mind it's another step towards the 1984 style of lazy policing. Just keep everything you have on everyone and produce the guilty party for summary execution after a quick flick through the card files suggest that it must be you.
