I don't know that there is a specific genre, Nirvana were good at it. Wikipedia's Nirvana page describes it thus - Nirvana utilized dynamic shifts that went from quiet to loud. Man.

I must have listened to music before "genres" were invented. I only recognise good music and rubbish music. But actually the rubbish music isn't music to my ears. Mostly it's just noise.
