What was it: a heavy Light combination.
Iron Butterfly, Lead Zeppelin, Curved Air, et alia
It must be old age but, for the life of me, I can't remember.

After listening to some Iron Butterfly (never 'eard of 'em afore), I'd describe that as progressive folk psychedelia, of the type that Hawkwind and Jethro Tull did, with a little Latin-esque jazz fusion thrown in from the Santana school.
It could be described as being as pretentious as my description!

The name pre-dates Heavy Metal and Prog-Rock.
Jethro Tull was around at the time but Hawkwind had not been formed.
We were the UK's Hippies. Pink Floyd was still a Rock Band with pretencions.
The Music, several early Led Zep tracks are well known for this, usually started with a cool quiet section which then morphed into a heavy Rock section. Before the Who did their infamous Leeds Concert.

When I worked in a very famous second hand record store in Manchester I used to file Curved Air and Iron Butterfly on the Prog Rock section, and Led Zeppelin lived in the Heavy Rock section.
Curved Air could also be found in Fusion, which is where the various off-shoots of Jazz congregrated

Psychedelic rock, as well as a few other genres, according to Wikipedia. They also have their own entry
