Are you folks sure you're talking about 1975?

1976 was the heat-wave year - hottest on record.

Snec. They are all a bit like me, don't know what day it is never mind which year was which.

Snec '75/'76 were back to back heat wave years. 1976 is remembered more because it followed after a previous dry summer, winter and spring, which in turn gave us the queues at street standpipes for water. We were OK as our water was then from underground boreholes and would need a ten year drought to threaten us, but only 10 miles away families were on a permanent family rota taking turns to stand in queues for their water every day.

I wouldn't care to say which was technically hotter on account of actual temperature records, but they were both gloriously hot. Long, hot and dry, but glorious.

In the Central England Temperature series 1976 was the hottest summer for more than 350 years and probably for much longer.

In fact the weather broke in '76 on the August bank holiday, I remember getting drenched at the Reading festival in a torrential cloudburst. After 2 hot summers we all believed raincoats during the summer had become unnecessary forever!

1975 was a heatwave remember it clearly I was on a trining course in snowdonia where it rained for the full two weeks, when my boots dried out the stiching rotted and they fell apart.

Sold an awful lot of lager in my pub in 1976. Was there really a water shortage?

There must have been a water shortage in my area as the beer was back up to full strength!
