The Palestinians get a Unesco seat

With a majority of 107 in favour out of 173 countries voting Palestine has finally won a seat, subject to ratification by the UN Security Council. Washington then immediately announced that it was cutting funding to Unesco which would be by a considerable amount. They passed a law in the 1990s that "allows Washington to cut funding to any UN body that admits Palestine as a full member...." full details here

Now, what gives me concern is how on earth is the Palestine/Israel question ever going to be resolved, when other countries with great influence 'start throwing their toys out of the pram' at the first sign of possible appeasement. Will this Middle-Eastern weeping sore ever be healed? TC.

I suspect you know the answer to that - never! It's too deep-rooted and full of mistrust on both sides.

It's disappointing that the US has taken the line it has.

The US is probably the most well known nation in the world that fought for for and obtained independence in order to exist.

It would not do for it to support a putative state whose whole perception is founded on the one overriding principle that one of its neighbours should cease to exist and be wiped from the face of the earth.

Peaceful coexistence presupposes that all parties continue to exist.

It seems to me that the US have been chasing a policy on Israel & Palestine that cannot work. The situation has been stuck in a deadlock for decades.

It seems that most of the countries of the world want to see a change, and the UNESCO vote shows that pretty clearly.

With China and Russia voting in favour of UNESCO membership, and the Uk's abstention, that will put a lot of pressure on the US to accept a vote for full membership to the UN at the Security Council vote. The US will veto it, though. This time.

i think they should be given a chance of full independence in gazza and east jerusalem. they might them divert their energy to build their new nation and making money.

if they continue their bad ways then israel should continue to come down hard on them

Jerusalem is a hot pot of various religions and cultures, how can you give a full independence to that?.
