Why are all these old threads appearing on the forums?

At first I thought it was spammers digging up old threads, but these have no recent messages on them.

FE deletes the spammer's posts but leaves the thread showing.

For those not aware, there is a modification coming to lock old threads that haven't had a contribution in XX days.

The idea was mooted 3 weeks ago and we were asked for our opinion. We still don't know what decision has been taken (if any) or when it will come into effect.
