Looks like a dig of an old Roman fort or maybe the foundations for Dartmoor Prison being laid back in God knows when.

Bingalau, I hate to agree with you but you are correct in your first guess. Having said that, it shouldn't prove to hard for you to remember, surely they must have given you a map of the camp when you were on guard duty ;o}}
