I was a bit suprised to hear that Mr Yates was public school educated. Always tended to associate those former pupils with the 'city', banks lawyers etc. - never as policemen.

Just shows, you live and learn.

My partner is public school educated and she works part time as an admin assistant.

Just because you go to a public school doesn't automatically get you a cushy job in a bank, or seat in the House.

Consider the rock singer Frank Turner, he was at Eton at the same time as the Duke of Cambridge...

The Met is as full of honest Officers as any other part of Society.

Unfortunately, many of the perks offered do not really register as being dishonest by the Recipient, just a recognition of their personal status.

You obviously didn't appreciate my 'stereotyping' argument! But, similarly, your point about your partner cannot be used to show anything - I might ask what proportion of 'city' employees are from public schools, and would we get a similar proportion employed as , for example, coal miners? Patently obvious we would not!

The rock singer and the Duke makes no sense to me at all, so I pass on that.

I'm sorry, I really don't understand your point.

Public school educated children fill many professions, many parents skimp & scrape so they can afford to send their kids to grammar school rather than the local comprehensive. From that school they may go to university, or may go on to join dad down the pit, or even become a policeman.

My point about Frank Turner and William Windsor is that they were both in the same year at Eton, one joined a punk band, and one is second in line to the throne, all kinds of people go to public school.

If you were just stereotyping then you've just proved how futile that was...

It seems my post of 3-46pm today has got under your skin for some reason - I only expressed my suprise at the career path chosen and certainly don't wish to get into a public school debate (although your post seems to suggest you think grammar schools are all 'public schools' - wrong, I'm afraid!).

It wasn't a grammar school that Mr Yates attended, it was Malborough College!

"..all kinds of people go to public school"

But invariably, those who have wealth?? (and wealth is a subjective assessment, of course.)

Lots of Police Officers have been educated at Public schools, and so have lots of criminals.

In the main, Public schools offer a very high standard of education, but that doesn't mean that all the people who go to these schools take full advantage of what's on offer.
