Dont let the title put you off, its a strategy a friend does that iv been trying to wrap my head around.
Ok here goes,
A friend of mine has a gaming website and server, he wants as many people to come play his game, so he gets all the players to vote on a top 100 list of similar games so his game is number one on this list, This is his sole advertising for his gaming site and game.
Is this a really dumb idea to advertise his game and site?
Can you offer up better ways to advertise his site and game?

It's not a dumb idea - in fact it's a very commonly used strategy. However, by itself it's highly unlikely to be successful way of promoting his game ....unless of course he already has enough voting players to be able to catapault his game to the top of the list....in which case it's probably unnecessary!
It needs to be part of a larger marketing strategy.
