got me think about something that has puzzled me for a while. Perhaps one of our potato farming forum members knows the answer.

Jersey Royals.

When I was but a stripling, and Forum Editing was not even a gleam in my eye, I used to look forward to the Jersey Royal season. Those delicious little kidney shaped tubers that came coated with a fine layer of Jersey dust were a delight, boiled with their skins on and generously anointed with butter. You could make a meal of the waxy little beauties.

Now I see bags labelled 'Jersey Royal potatoes', but the contents are not Jersey Royals - they're very ordinary looking, and tasting, rather floury things. From Jersey they may be, but Royals they are not.

What's up doc?

I know the story of how Jersey Royals came about, by the way, I just want to know what happened to them.

The simple fact is, supermarkets do not sell 'real'Jersey Royals any more.

I suspect that the Jersey producers were finding it hard to supply our needs, despite the fact that Jersey only exports to us - no other country gets the potatoes.

I agree FE, I hunt around to find the loose Jersey Royals, the ones with the flakey skins, then scrape them under a running tap, boil in salted water until a sharp knife will just penetrate them, remove from the heat and strain, cover allow to stand for five to ten minutes, during this time add a generous knob of butter and some finely chopped parsley. Delicious...ENJOY PM

I think you will all notice the taste difference if you steam your spuds, Jersey Royals or otherwise. In factt any veg will benefit from being steamed.

It may take a little longer but it's worth it. I haven't dropped any vegetable into boiling water in years.

We've had a couple of lots of 'Jersey Royals' over the last couple of weeks and although they had the kidney shape of Jersey Royals they most certainly didn't have the waxy texture that I normally associate with them. Nice enough but not like they used to be.

Had some last night with grilled chicken and Asparagus and melted butter.

Only a guess FE but when you were stripling (dare I suggest many moons ago)the potatoes that you tasted would have come straight from the soil, and on a Sunday maybe even that very morning. Your supermarket jerseys sadly have some age even a week or so depending on the time of year and that makes a big difference in taste.
