should my son choose A level accounts or AAT accounts

My son has stayed on in the 6th form and was supposed to study accounts A level this year but the school at the last minute did not run the course (so he is studying A level maths and english).

The school is finally running the course this September coming, it is A level accounts, i noticed at a local college near us they are running the AAT level 2 and level 3, does anyone know which would be the best to study as my son would like to work as an accountant/ position in finance, what qualifications do employers prefer?

Having looked at a few employment websites, i beleive the employers want AAT rather than A Level, only problem is he will be studying for his 2nd year in A levels this September and won't be able to attend the AAT at college (we were hoping the 6th form were offering the AAT courses not the A Level)

Any advice would be appreciated thanks in advance

Although it is possible to start your studies while not employed in an accounting/tax environment, all bodies require at least three years’ relevant practical experience before you can apply for membership..." A lot depends

on whether he wants to go to university or not. If he wants a degree it would be best to do the A levels. If he's set on becoming an accountant without going to university the ATT route can be an option, but it's not the only one.

All three levels of the ATT course would take about the same time as being at university, depending on the amount of time your son devotes to study. Lots of accountancy practices like to train people on the job, so the lack of a degree or ATT qualification is not necessarily a disadvantage. All the major accountancy companies recruit people straight from school, but they have pretty rigid qualifications requirements.

As a guide, your son would need a minimum ABB at A Level plus a minimum Grade B in GCSE Maths and GCSE English Language (or equivalent).

He should consider his options very carefully - is there a third A level he can do?
