Google has lost a patent infringement case brought by Linux.
I thought the very idea of "open source" is that anyone can use it?
Can someone explain the legal niceties to me please, hopefully simply enough for me to understand?

If you want to use an open source program you can do, you can even alter it if you so wish, but the resulting code must also remain open source.
That's Google's mistake, they released their version of the code with a more restrictive licence...

I didn't really read the link. I got the story from the BBC and simply quoted the first source I found on Google as I know that members like to see a link.
